On 19th December, 2016, Andrei Karlov, Russian Ambassador to Turkey was shot dead at a photography exhibition called ‘Russia through Turks' eyes’ in Ankara, Turkey. With the Ambassador lying dead on the ground, the gunman pointed his gun skyward and shouted, "Allahu Akbar. We are the descendants of those who supported the Prophet Muhammad, for jihad. Do not forget Aleppo, do not forget Syria! We die in Aleppo, you die here." As these moments revealed itself, Burhan Ozbilici made multiple images with the images displayed in the exhibition as its background. The images are now known as one of the most iconic photograph of that year.
Trying to get away from its iconicity, this body of work tries to look at the original images from the exhibition where the assignation took place. The pixelated landscape photographs are all we can see of Russia through a Turks’ eyes in the face of growing atmosphere of conflict and war and involvement of each of these countries.
